trying other genres

hi

i'm pretty set in my ways with regards to electronic music. i know what i like and i listen to it a lot: psychedelic trance.

that said, i'm always interested in checking out other genres because i like music as a whole and would not want to miss something because i, or somebody else, put it is a specific pigeon hole. so i listen to a lot of HH and trance recommendations that i see here.

i read a lot of posts where people are talking about how they love their music "hard". i've listened to a lot of "hard" house and "hard" trance and much of it - for me - is just not that hard compared to a lot of the psytrance i listen to.

that's why it surprises me that so few people here listen to psytrance. i've made a few recommendations in the past but they seem to go nowhere.

anyway, to the point, i was just listeniing to a great psytrance track which i think some people here might really enjoy and which might act as a door to examination of other psytrance acts and tracks. so check out: Youth of the Galaxy (Final Demand Mix) by Doof.

Doof are a venerable psytrance act - they've been around a while. that track is a long track at 8.00m but it's worth it. about 4.10m in, it has a build-up which would not sound out of place in a huge club trance anthem smile.gif

let me know what you think? if you can't find it on kazaa or whatever, drop me a line and i can stick it up on one of my websites.

To me it seems alot of people say they love their music "hard" becos that is what others have labelled it (media, clubbers and DJs alike) Alot of the techno i listen to is alot harder than hard trance or hard house. But then again, i wouldnt limit myself by just sayin I love it hard as there will always be something harder.

I personally blame the media for alot of this whole pigeon hole shite. inventing new genres every other week ffs. They form opinions for other people (although these people are gullable for taking it all in) and these people actually follow these "trends" or "genres". I would love to be able to not have to pigeon hole my DJing style and productions, but in todays clubbing community, sadly you have to.

As they say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" so surely this should apply to music, and to me it does. But for some strange reason all this is lost these days and we are continually locked in endless debates about music genres good/bad when really it doesnt matter in the slightest.

Sorry Alasdair, i went way off topic, but you always raise good points amoungst alot of the crap and I thought i would get a few views of my own down.

Hi Alasdair,

I checked out the tune...and it was good, really good, but it didn't suck me in. Don't get me wrong, give me lights and a sizeable sound system and I could easily trance myself into a stupor with tunes like this. And I would certainly boogie for a lengthy period if, say Halliwell, brought some stuff like this into his set...but, it didn't grab me, it didn't have that soulful quality for me.

But hey, each to their own and all that...I'll certainly keep an open mind and ear for more psy-trance...cheers for the education.

I like Psy Trance, having been broken in by some Man with No Name CD. Still love that CD !! heartbeat.gif

Used to have great fun at psy nights at the Fridge, but then they all started to get too hard and [censored]. grumpy.gif

Anyone know of any Psy nights that don't de-generate into Hard House ?
