CTW Members Mr Happy Posted August 23, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted August 23, 2003 personally i wouldnt say so, but then maybe i'm biased as i'm 1 of those guys that dont liek to play big tunes. the reason y i think its not elitist gone mad is because i like to play tunes that people havent heard before to give em a new unique experience. if theres an anthem tune that really works well with a set i will play it if it needs to be played. but i wont play an anthem tune purly cuz its an anthem tune. does this make me 'elitist', 'snobby' or 'underground'? personally i think it doesnt. it just makes me more creative and imagnative with my record selection. and brave enuf to play sumthin new and unique. whats ur thoughts? Aslong as the crowd is your main priority then it doesnt matter what you play as long as they are going for it. I take it this thread has came about after mine and LML's posts in the Steve Hill thread? What i was getting at was that there are DJs that play obscure and underground just to be cool. And are more worried about their mixing, therefore lose the sight of that the crowd comes first. Ive even spoke to DJs that will play two tracks after each other just because they mix well. However your thread seems to be purely about the tunes you play, but surely that will come down to where you are playin? If you are playin a small underground techno club, then im sure "anthems" wouldnt go down that well. So by playin your obscure stuuf, you would have the crowd as your main priority. CTW DJs LittleMissLoud Posted August 23, 2003 CTW DJs Share Posted August 23, 2003 In my eyes, a good tune is a good tune, regardless if it is in the charts, or if no-one has heard of it. Some people, however, seem to dismiss anything percieved as 'mainstream', and will only play very obscure stuff, as if trying to prove a point. I was not saying that by playing lesser known tunes makes a dj elitist, it's just that some seem to forget that the crowd is most important, and therefore, you have to give them what THEY want, not just play tunes to score points as to who owns the most exclusive/ rarest/ whatever vinyl/ CDs! I know its not for everyone, but most of the people want to hear the same tracks over and over again and so this happens.... Its why smaller labels have such a hard time breaking through - if their tracks are not licensed to albums, clubbers dont know them and for some reason dont want to listen to them - regardless of how good they may be - so tracks such as james lawson 'energize' get played like 6+ times a night when they get released.... God, no, i didn't think ANYONE liked to hear the same track more than once or twice in a night - i know i don't! Do they seriously? How do u know?
