I think the issue is expectation of failure. Rather than fear of failure.

For many years scientists, and sportsmen women and administrators believed it was simply impossible for a man to run the mile in under 4 minutes. They held that it was beyond human capacity.

In the year after Roger Banister, and his pacemakers Chris Chataway et all, managed it, 14 other runners did as well. What were these guy’s doing before Roger Banister? I mean they didn’t suddenly become world class runners, some of them must have been capable of achieving it before Roger Banister did.

The point was that none of them thought that they could, or indeed that anybody could, so they didn’t bother training, pacemaking, strategizing to do it.

Roger Banister was a young medical student, who thought the received wisdom was wrong, and set about achieving the goal. He was confident enough to get a crowd of people down to white city to witness the event, and to get an official timer from the book of records to record it. He set himself a concrete goal, and set about achieving it.

Unless you try, you will fail.

But if you only try, like England in the Football World Cup, you will probably fail. And if you think you will or expect to fail, again you probably will.

But if you are only afraid of failing, and channel that into preparation, attention to detail, hard work, so that you know you will succeed, given a degree of luck, like England in the Rugby world cup, you will succeed.
