CTW Members jon_m Posted September 14, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted September 14, 2003 finally started to master this rather tricky but wicked sounding trick does anyone else use it/ do it? i know its a favourite with Halliwell and i know Whitby does it well too
CTW DJs LittleMissLoud Posted September 15, 2003 CTW DJs Share Posted September 15, 2003 I'm not sure I know what you are talking about? Are you talking about cutting in the percussion as oppose to the beat? Quote I'M HUNGRY!
CTW Members Mr Happy Posted September 15, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted September 15, 2003 i presume his on about when u play 2 of the same record only 1 is played at every half beat to the 1st record (obviously both played at the same bpm). and basically i chop bits of the 2nd record in and out of the 1st record. CTW DJs Chris Hawkes Posted September 16, 2003 CTW DJs Share Posted September 16, 2003 do you mean using the two tracks to provide a delay?? one track is half a beat behind the other. u can do this to pretty much the same effect with the delay effect on djm

CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted September 16, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted September 16, 2003 Presumably phasing (in the sense of the "flange" style effect) only happens when the tracks are (as good as) in sync.
CTW Members jon_m Posted September 16, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted September 16, 2003 @ this entire post!! lml may be right i guess! its when u chop one record over the other ( best on a breakdown) but instead of flickin channel up in time with beat it goes down with beat creating a 'zube zube' sound! Not best explanation to be fair!!
CTW DJs LittleMissLoud Posted September 16, 2003 CTW DJs Share Posted September 16, 2003 It only works with some records, but I think you might mean bringing in the snare sound, as opposed to the beat of the next record during the breakdown of the one that's playing? I've heard Charlotte Birch do it, and it sounds wicked if the record you bring in has the right kind of percussion. Quote I'M HUNGRY!
CTW Members jon_m Posted September 16, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted September 16, 2003 yeah its called choppin against the beat!! or at least thats what iv called it!! wheres whitby when u need him? hel know what im on about!! CTW Members Mr Happy Posted September 16, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted September 16, 2003 yeah i do this all the time. i'm forever chopping bits in and out in my mixes. be it basslines, percussion, acid lines or even vocals if i play a rare vocally record 4 the most part i find DJs that dont bother to play with the eq's and faders live in the mix very dull DJs. CTW DJs Chris Hawkes Posted September 16, 2003 CTW DJs Share Posted September 16, 2003 i play with the faders and eq's loads when i play out - sometimes too much!!!
CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted September 18, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted September 18, 2003 I hate it when DJs play with the settings "too much". It sounds like they're drawing attention to themselves, rather than respecting the records they are playing. I think that's why producers often make very good DJs - they understand how to make the best use of the different elements of a track, and do cool stuff without being too unsubtle. Or with some HH/hardcore when youv'e got that off-beat wubwub (for want of a better name) sound. Don't overdo it tho lad !
