CTW Members Ginge Posted October 16, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted October 16, 2003 Funky house is good. Not as good as Hard house but its starting to grow on me. Fave funky tune is probably "Rise" by Soul providers or "E Samba" by Junior Jack.
CTW Members Mr Happy Posted October 16, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted October 16, 2003 personally i find funky house very narrow minded and predictable. it does absolutely nothing for me. dont get me wrong, i do like some funky house DJs, but i have noticed that all the top funky house DJs i've heard havnt described thier style as being 'funky house'. trophy twins is a classic example of this. Good funky house DJs have to vary their set with techno, house, breakbeat, tribal, etc whist keeping the funk otherwise it gets very samey very quickly. funky techno tho, thats a different story Quote Mr Happy's fishy fish MangaFish munch munch MSN & e-mail - mangafish@mangafish.net AOL - MangaMorgan Online mixes - http://www.mangafish.net/mixes/

CTW Members Zen_Master Posted October 16, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted October 16, 2003 I cannot stand what gets called "funky" house these days- ie awful commercial shite. I really enjoy listening to house music, since it has a great deal of variation, but tbh ive been getting into the more alternative end of things recently, bits of techno, gabber, hardcore and electro as well. CTW Members JoeDrawb Posted October 16, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted October 16, 2003 when I play a funky house set..well I would rather call it a progression of house music..start off tribal, make it progressive - deeper bass lines, throw in a few big funky tunes here and there (normally not the main mix of the tune)...and vary it around..while trying to keep the balance right so it all goes together.. kinda how mr happy said....Dave and Huey also pull off a good set. now I have been taken over by house music, my HH records are gathering dust..will keep em for a old school hard house set in a few years time Quote chilled out beach house thru to bangin' hard german trance http://stores.ebay.co.uk/worldwidevinyl

CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted October 17, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted October 17, 2003 I've been collecting funky house (on and off, of various sorts) for 6 or 7 years, and I have to say I like it more than ever. It crosses over with so many other genres, there is tons of material for good DJs to mash up. A lot of people who slag off funky house have simply got a very narrow definition of what that means - typically that dull soulful US house thing (which can be just as cliched as your "Tidy" hard house or Euro trance). In exactly the same way, a lot of people who slag off techno simply assume that it is all that nosebleed / wall-of-noise stuff (wrong, it can be funky and/or subtle as you like). Mr Happy: perhaps the reason that many of the big DJs don't call themselves "funky house" DJs is because lots of stupid people assume that just means predictable US house drivel! Funky house rules. Techy stuff, tribal stuff, proggy stuff, deep stuff, dark stuff, quirky electroey stuff, some soulful/uplifting stuff, jazzy (dare I say garagey) stuff... The only problem is that, as with any genre of music, there are plenty of wank DJs out there who think it is acceptable to play 20 variations on a theme then go home.
