Celeron Vs Pentium

What are the merits of having a pentium 4 over an intel celeron in a laptop. I need to get one to replace my crappy desktop, but really need a portable. I will be using it for microsoft office programs, photo editing and the internet. Can anyone help me on this? I have seen a Sony laptop which looks pretty good and was just wondering how much of a difference pentium makes if I am not playing fast games or doing musicy things on it.

really simple, the celeron has less algorithms in it for processing. Even though it's got the power equivilent to a pentium it just don't cut the mustard.

If you're gonna do serious photo editing then get the Pentium chip, and [censored] the celeron off.

Well, not too serious photo editing really, just for the ol' family album and the occasional mock-up birthday card. This is why I am considering a celeron. I never play games on the pc as i have a ps2, and hubby has a desktop for his music. I can't think of any other applications that would need a pentium.

I know I could get a pretty cheap laptop with a smaller screen and P4 but I want one with 15 inch screen at least. Am planning on using it to write up my thesis over the next year and a half, and don't want to strain my eyes as I'm already half blind!

And now it's pretty urgent as I have just been told that the computer I work on in the lab is being taken away to another room, and will be used purely by a collegue. frown.gif

I think I'm gonna have to start begging for a rather large Christmas pressie.

Intel made the celeron to be a budget version of the pentium.

Simple really.

Pentium is best, but Celeron is cheapest.

Easier said than done in a laptop, most are intel.

Also, are there any makes I should go for, or avoid?

ive got an AJP laptop, they use desktop P4 processors instead of mobile ones so they're a lot faster. Means they have a massive power adaptor. U dont really need one for ur needs tho. However AJP have a very gud helpline.

When my dad was trying to decide on a new laptop he told me that most makes have laptops with the same spec as each other and the only difference is a a slight change in price.

I was going to post a gag about flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality but it's just flogging a dead horse.

Don't want one with a desktop processor as I want it to be mobile, and so want longer battery life etc..Plus we do have two desktops, it is only replacing one of those not both.

Yeah I know they have great desktop chips, but is this true about their mobile chips? These are only installed in a couple of makes of laptop, one being packard bell. I am leaning more toward a sony or toshiba myself. Most makes lean toward intel processors.

no not really, they have released the 64bit processor but intel have just released a chip designed for gaming which has more algorithms in it to process data.

although intel have had the 64bit processor out for a bit. however AMD's has been targeted at the home market.

ALSO intel were using 800FSB on some of their latest chips, which to the best of my knowledge AMD weren't doing.

if ur not playing fast games and have no intention of doing so....and if ur not gonna be using it for music purposes....then i wouldn't spend loads......a fast celeron would do for uni/college.....I have a amd850 and just use if for office2000/recording my mixes and the net and it runs great.....but try play a game on it and its crap...but IMO if u wanna play games, buy a xbox/ps2 - much easier!
