My HD died on me a few days ago and I want to recover all my lost photos and uni work as they are irreplacable. Tried getdataback and that was semi-successful, I'm now pinning my hopes on this little gem.

X-Ways Forensics is an advanced work environment for computer forensic examiners. It is closely integrated with the WinHex hex and disk editor and can be purchased as a forensic license for WinHex. X-Ways Forensics comprises all the general and specialist features known from WinHex, such as:

. Disk cloning and imaging, even under DOS with X-Ways Replica (forensically sound)
. Examining the complete directory structure inside raw image files, even spanned over several segments
. Various data recovery techniques and file carving
. Hard disk cleansing to produce forensically sterile media
. Gathering slack space, free space, inter-partition space, and generic text from drives and images
. File and directory catalog creation for all computer media
. Mass hash calculation for files (CRC32, MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, ...)
. Powerful simultaneous search capabilities for many search terms at the same time
. Bookmarks/annotations
. Bates-numbering of files
. Write protection to ensure data authenticity
. Complete case management
. Automated activity logging (audit logs)
. Automated reports that can be imported and further by any other application that understands HTML, such as MS Word
. View of all existing and deleted files on media by file type category (documents, images, Internet, ...), disregarding the subdirectory structure, fully customizable
. Gallery view for pictures (supports JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, TIFF, Bitmap, PNG, TGA, PCX, WMF, EMF, MNG, and JBG)*
. Skin color detection (e.g. to accelerate a forensic examiner's work when looking for traces of child pornography)*
. Detection of filename/file type mismatches (e.g. JPEG file concealed as .exe)
. Create your own hash sets
. Match files against hash databases (NSRL RDS 2.x, HashKeeper, and ILook supported)
. Ability to read Encase images
. Detection of host-protected areas (HPA), a.k.a. ATA-protected areas
