Rapist wins lottery!!

I completely agree with everything Scream (and Squeakage) say(s)

basically, you have to decide on the purpose of prison

1. punishment, or

2. rehabiliation

and the fact is, whichever one it is you cannot punish people for ever for their crimes. If you do, you run an even higher risk of them re-offending (as they have nothing to lose).

With regards to giving the winnings to rape-related charities. A good idea, but how is that any different to docking someone's salary for ever to pay for the crimes they have committed, been sentenced for, and served their time?

A good analogy, is that after WWI it was decided that (the then rich) Germany should pay reparations to the various countries he raped and pillaged...

... however these were so high that the country lost most of it's wealth and ended up with massive unemployment and hyper-inflation. This sense of being hard-done by let to extream nationalist feelings and fuelled the rise of a person known as Adolf Hitler...

... I think we know the rest.

The lottery is a tax for the terminally stupid, who gives a fuck if he won? Should everyone be made to take a worthiness test before they play? If you fail the test should you pay, say only 10p a ticket as you're now not entitled to the top prize.

Yeah this guy is a massive c*nt but he as much right to that money as everyone else that plays. Every time someone on benefits or a criminal record wins the jackpot the sun is up in arms about it. Maybe he'll use the money to destroy himself? Frankly, I don't care.

Good points Russ/Scream/Kether.

Lisa. I'm not taking the piss out of you for posting it. I'm taking the piss out of whichever trashy newspapers (a tenner says it was the Daily Mail...?) decided it was newsworthy.

QUOTE (Lisa @ Aug 11 2004, 13:52)
I personally feel they should not be allowed to do the lottery & that his winnings should be taken off him...

Do you have no faith in the prison system? By the time he gets out he will be rehabilitated anyway [or so the theory goes] ... it's his choice what he spends his dosh on then. If he chooses to donate to charity, then good on him. If not, that's his choice, just as it is my choice what I do with my money.

Do you think people who are rich before they go to prison should be stripped of their wealth too? What difference does it make whether he got rich before, during or after his sentence?

And if you answered 'yes' to that question (should criminals lose their wealth) why do you think rich criminals should effectively be penalised more than other crimimals?

If you don't think he will be rehabilitated by the time he's set free - i.e. you have no faith in our prison system - then that is a separate issue. The lottery-winning matter does not come into it.

There is so little substance to the story it's untrue. Tabloid trash.

yeh I guess you have a vaild point LE & it is why I stuck the post up, to see what peoples thoughts are, yes the guy won it fair & square & im not saying he didnt & no, of course he should not have his wealth taken away if he had been rich!!

I would like to think & hope the prison system will work, but we all know that at times it does not & crimanals re-offend, but thats a seperate issue tongue.gif

I just think it's a classic case of sods law, I guess!! grin.gif

^^ Too right.

"Mr Blunkett said: "We can't stop a prisoner or their family from buying a ticket, but we can look closely at making sure they don't benefit from a single penny while in prison."

David Blunkett worries me a lot.

i've been reading this and it annoys the hell out of me, with support groups saying he should give that money to them. IF SO, then give him his 18yrs back. Fair deal in the end of the day if that's what they want. The fact is money wont take away what happened nor will it make living with what happened any easier. This in my eyes is just kicking osmeone while they are done and jealously because they feel he shouldn't of won. But like it's been said before, "who" really deserves to win it? No one in the end of the day. Anyway the sooner this government are out the better in my eyes at the moment.

Although I agree with some of your comments scream, the one I do NOT agree with is your remark, it's like kicking someone when they are down!! He is not down, he is a convicted rapists!!!

Yes he is serving his time & won the money fair & square, but he is not by any means down on his luck!!

no my point is, if you punish someone, it should be as the law see's it, the punishment fits the crime. SO then saying later on when he wins the lottery, "OH btw we're gonna take that off you as well" is kicking someone while they are done. If it was the case, then what they should of done is said it when he was convicted. Regardless of what he did he's paying for his crime, so yeah if they take the money off him, that is kicking him while his down because he's paying already.
