I am thinking of installing this now but have delayed the installation for some time due to most SP2 users having problems although not sure what problems ..

Has anyone had any problems with SP2 (if you are an XP user) ? If so what problems were you having ?

Hoping mine doesn't fook up !

:S

Heard of a few people having issues getting to grips with the firewal which is automatically switched on in this release - i.e. it can have the effect of stopping a few apps working unless its configured correctly.

Strange that the default has changed :s This is one thing which peed me off going from 2000->XP - many defaults were changed to what 'they' thought would be better.

you can turn it off - select 'I have a firewall I will monitor myself' and its gone :-)

SP2 fixes a load of bugs as well which can only be a good thing?? touch wood, I have had no problems so far anyway

Coming soon...

I have had some problems with plug & play since installing SP2.

E.g. if my [external, Firewire] soundcard is not switched on before I boot up my PC, it won't work (whereas before you could switch it on any time after booting up, and it would be fine).

Similarly, if my [uSB 2.0] MP3 walkman is not plugged into the USB port prior to booting up, then when I do plug it in, it comes up with an error declaring that it has been plugged into a USB 1.0 port and will operate at reduced rate... even though I've plugged it into my USB 2.0 port and it used to work fine!

One other problem I've had: I had to download a new version of Nero (CD-burning software) as the version I had no longer works with SP2 installed (it's on Microsoft's official list of "programs that will stop working on SP2"!!)

The latter problem is probably not Microsoft's fault, but I was pretty pissed off about the plug & play problems!

andy have you tried checking for and updating the drivers for your soundcard and/or mp3 player (or even just re-installing)? those manufacturers might release updated drivers themself, for full SP2 compatibility. could take them a while to 'catch up' tho unsure.gif

the nero thing is a swine as well...the reason is probably listed deep down in a list of changes somewhere. it's all for the Future Good of Mankind, you know :unsure

Who knows, it might crop up in a pub quiz one day! smile.gif I did have version 6.3.1.17. Now I've updated to version 6.3.1.25 which works fine.

To be fair, some of the bad press Microsoft got when they released SP2 was unfair. The papers made it sound like it was their fault that lots of programs stopped working, which is not necessarily the case.

the papers which reported it....are we talking the "relevent" press (eg theregister.co.uk) or are we talking the daily express?

i wouldn't believe reports of oil prices from the daily express, let alone an in depth technical review from 'em smile.gif
